Icy Conditions Pose Hazards and Increase Car Accident Risks on Chicago Roads
A deadly morning unfolded on Chicago’s roadways as icy conditions wreaked havoc during a recent morning commute. Drivers had to deal with the dangerous effects of overnight precipitation and rapidly dropping temperatures. The icy conditions on area roadways led to a series of car accidents that resulted in injuries and fatalities. From expressways to city streets, the entire metropolitan area faced challenges.
One of the most harrowing car accidents occurred on northbound Route 394 near Sauk Trail. Illinois State Police reported a chain-reaction collision involving 10 vehicles at about 4 a.m. A 36-year-old man driving an SUV struck the back of a semi-trailer and died at a local hospital.
In another serious incident, the Bishop Ford Freeway witnessed a major crash near 159th Street, blocking all lanes in both directions for an extended period. Multiple semis were involved in the accident. Commuters across the South Side and south suburbs also found themselves navigating a chaotic web of blocked roads and traffic jams.
Expressways further north, such as the Edens and the Eisenhower, were not spared from the icy conditions. Cars on the Edens spun out and crashed into walls near Old Orchard. State troopers responding to these incidents faced additional risks as one of their vehicles was struck by another, causing significant damage. Fortunately, the trooper escaped unharmed. State troopers responded to six collisions on the Eisenhower within a few hours.
The dangers extended beyond the expressways, highlighting that no area was immune to the icy conditions. A car accident occurred at the intersection of 31st Street and Western Avenue. Some city streets were slippery due to hazardous patches of black ice.
Chicago Streets and Sanitation Commissioner Cole Stallard acknowledged the unique challenges posed by the sudden transition to icy weather. With temperatures plummeting after a recent warm spell, the streets lacked the necessary treatment to combat the icy onslaught. Stallard explained the focus on bridges and overpasses during the initial response, as these areas are prone to freezing first due to their cooler temperatures and shady conditions.
However, the commissioner acknowledged that more could have been done to address the widespread issue of icy roads. He expressed concern over the lack of salt on the streets, emphasizing that the sudden drop in temperature caught the city off guard. The lack of preparation contributed to the perilous conditions that commuters faced, both on expressways and city streets alike.
The Illinois Department of Transportation urged drivers to slow down, especially when approaching intersections, using ramps and driving on bridges. The department also recommended drivers increase the following distance between vehicles to ensure there is enough space to stop without having to brake suddenly. Additionally, drivers should watch out for black ice that can appear as wet pavement.
The recent surge in car accidents on Chicago’s roads is a stark reminder of the challenges that icy conditions present. Both authorities and drivers must prioritize safety and preparedness during winter months. Improved coordination in winter maintenance efforts and heightened awareness on the part of drivers can help mitigate the risks associated with icy roads.
Being extra vigilant and avoiding risky driving behaviors are vital when driving in adverse weather conditions. However, the unfortunate reality is that car accidents still occur despite taking every precaution while traveling on slick roadways in and around Chicago.
Not only do car accidents cause painful injuries, but they also rack up expensive medical bills and cause extensive property damage. Healing from your injuries after a crash can take a long time. Car accidents also result in intangible losses such as emotional distress and pain and suffering.
