News reports recently emerged of two pedestrians dying after they were struck by a vehicle while crossing a busy Illinois highway. The pedestrian accident occurred in Machesney Park in Winnebago County.
A car fatally hit a man and a woman close to the intersection of Illinois Route 251 and Forest Hills Road. The driver remained at the scene of the pedestrian accident and cooperated with authorities.
The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the case. The sheriff reminded motorists to stay alert at all times and advised pedestrians to avoid crossing busy highways.
Both drivers and pedestrians are constantly dealing with distractions. Whether it is using smartphones, getting engrossed in a conversation, eating or drinking, or adjusting the radio, there are many things competing for our attention.
Unfortunately, failing to focus on our surroundings can result in accidents that cause a wide range of injuries. For example, a motorist who is texting while driving can easily miss a pedestrian who suddenly walks out in front of them. Pedestrian accidents can be prevented if motorists pay attention to the road and pedestrians ensure they are visible and only crossing where it is safe to do so.
