The electric scooter ride-share system is a growing trend in many cities in the United States and around the world. It allows people to travel short distances quickly without having to rely on cars or public transit. E-scooters can shorten any commute. They also offer a transportation option for individuals who do not have their own vehicles.

In highly-populated cities, you can find thousands of motor vehicles in use every day. This produces a high level of gas emissions. The use of e-scooters helps to maintain a cleaner, healthier environment, which is one of the goals of Lime.

How does Lime work

Lime is a dockless electric scooter sharing company founded in 2017. It has a mobile app that is used to find Lime e-scooters in your area. Each e-scooter has a code that is used to begin and end your rental. Only one person at a time is allowed to operate a Lime e-scooter. You can rent a Lime scooter for 24 hours.

To promote safe and responsible riding, Lime provides instructions on how to properly use and park the e-scooters. Lime’s requirements for a safe rental of e-scooters include:

Do not operate a Lime electric scooter while under the influence of drugs, alcohol, medication, or other substance that can impair your ability to ride safely
Park Lime e-scooters in accordance with the applicable laws and regulations, and in a manner that Lime can access it

Lime users must be alert to pedestrians and drivers at all times to avoid any collisions or accidents.

Lime scooter laws and injuries

Illinois is one of the few states that do not have a helmet law that requires people to wear helmets. Wearing a helmet, however, can protect you from injury in case of an accident. Electric scooters leave your body exposed to the environment around you; therefore, wearing a helmet is the only form of protection available.

Furthermore, Illinois does not have laws that specifically address the use of electric scooters. Illinois is one of many states that is working to introduce a bill outlining the regulations for e-scooters. If Illinois passes the bill, Illinois law would require riders:

To be at least 16 years old; and
Have a learner’s permit, driver’s license or state ID

Additional electric scooter regulations may include:

Where you can ride
Where you can park
Maximum speed limit

Although Lime has rules in place to keep users and non-users safe, it cannot control riders who choose to ride recklessly. Reckless riding can lead to collisions. Lime also cannot control where riders park their e-scooters. Improperly parked scooters run the risk of being tripping hazards.
