A rollover car crash on Interstate 57 in Chicago claimed two lives in early February 2025, according to local news reports. The crash occurred around 1:15 p.m. on Interstate 57 near 147th Street. At least two lanes of traffic were closed while emergency responders worked and Illinois State Police investigated the crash.

Two people, a 23-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, were pronounced dead at the scene. The Illinois State Police have not yet released the results of their investigation.

Accidents and Injuries in Chicago-Area Car Accidents

As of February 5, 2025, the Illinois Department of Transportation had recorded 56 fatal car accidents in the state, causing a total of 61 deaths. Twenty-two of those deaths occurred in Cook County.

Of these 56 crashes and 61 deaths, 10 occurred on interstate highways such as I-57. City streets were the most common site of fatal car accidents, accounting for 24 deaths between January 1 and February 5, 2025. Crashes on state and US routes accounted for 14 deaths, while accidents on county and township roads accounted for 11 deaths.

Pedestrians still face an elevated risk of death or serious injury on Illinois roads. As of February 5, 2025, 13 pedestrians have lost their lives on the state’s roadways.

These deaths are tragic and were likely preventable. Yet early crash statistics show some hope. Between January 1 and February 5, 2024, Illinois recorded 90 traffic crash deaths. 2025’s number of 61 deaths between these dates represents a decrease of 29 deaths from the prior year. Continuing these trends will require both the state and individual drivers to commit to road safety.

What To Do If You’re Injured or Lose a Loved One in a Collision

After any crash, safety is the top priority. Move vehicles out of the way of traffic, if possible. Contact emergency services by calling 911 or a posted local emergency number. Try not to move a critically injured person.

If you can, take photos or video or talk to witnesses at the scene. Providing the facts of the crash to a police officer can also help create a record, which you may rely on later to make a compensation case.

Get medical attention as soon as possible. Serious injuries require emergency medical intervention. If you didn’t visit the emergency room right after the crash, see a doctor as soon as possible. Your doctor can document your injuries, prescribe appropriate treatment, and create records that can also bolster your injury case.
