Spotlight on Trends: Illinois Sees Uptick in Truck Accidents
Recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveals a concerning trend in truck accidents, with a 76 percent increase in fatalities nationwide since 2009. Illinois is among the states with the steepest rise in deaths, highlighting the urgent need for improved road safety measures to protect both truck drivers and other motorists on the road.
There were 5,936 deaths from medium- and heavy-duty trucks in just 2022, the latest year for which NHTSA fatal crash data is available. Illinois was among the top 10 states with the highest number of truck accident fatalities that year, along with experiencing a dramatic increase of over 100 percent since 2009. These states accounted for more than half of all truck accident deaths nationwide.

In 2022, the number of truck accident-related injuries soared to 160,608, more than double the number reported in 2009. The increase is concerning, especially considering the 15 percent rise in truck vehicle miles traveled.

Fatal crashes involving large trucks due to blowouts or flat tires have increased by 79 percent, while such incidents for other vehicles have decreased by 44 percent. Similarly, truck accidents due to traveling too fast for conditions have spiked by 78 percent for trucks, compared to a 3 percent decline for other vehicles.
