Recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveals a concerning trend in truck accidents, with a 76 percent increase in fatalities nationwide since 2009. Illinois is among the states with the steepest rise in deaths, highlighting the urgent need for improved road safety measures to protect both truck drivers and other motorists on the road.

There were 5,936 deaths from medium- and heavy-duty trucks in just 2022, the latest year for which NHTSA fatal crash data is available. Illinois was among the top 10 states with the highest number of truck accident fatalities that year, along with experiencing a dramatic increase of over 100 percent since 2009. These states accounted for more than half of all truck accident deaths nationwide.

Truck accidents not only result in a tragic loss of life but also cause serious injuries. In 2022, the number of truck accident-related injuries soared to 160,608, more than double the number reported in 2009. The increase is concerning, especially considering the 15 percent rise in truck vehicle miles traveled.

The impact of such crashes on victims and their families is profound, often leading to long-term emotional and financial hardships. The Truck Safety Coalition, a nonprofit advocacy group, pointed out that 97 percent of crash deaths involving large trucks consisted of passenger vehicle occupants.

One of the key issues contributing to this rise is the involvement of younger and older truck drivers. Over the past decade, drivers between the ages of 16 and 24 and those aged 65 and older have seen the largest surges in fatal crashes, with respective increases of 143 percent and 90 percent.

The data highlights the need for stricter training, health and licensing standards within the trucking industry. Addressing the high turnover rate among truck drivers is also crucial to improving safety on the roads. Ensuring that drivers are well-trained can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and improve overall road safety.

High-speed roads present another major risk factor. Since 2010, there has been a 67 percent increase in fatal crashes involving large trucks. Roads with speed limits of 75mph or more have experienced an alarming 440 percent surge in fatal truck crashes.

Critical pre-crash events have also worsened for trucks compared to other vehicles since 2010. Fatal crashes involving large trucks due to blowouts or flat tires have increased by 79 percent, while such incidents for other vehicles have decreased by 44 percent. Similarly, truck accidents due to traveling too fast for conditions have spiked by 78 percent for trucks, compared to a 3 percent decline for other vehicles.

Truck drivers and trucking companies have a responsibility to perform regular vehicle maintenance and adhere to speed regulations to minimize the risk of dangerous truck accidents. Regular inspections and maintenance of trucks can prevent mechanical failures that lead to collisions, while strict enforcement of speed limits can deter reckless driving behaviors.

For those injured in truck accidents, understanding your rights and seeking compensation is crucial. Truck accidents often result in severe injuries, including traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, fractures and internal injuries. It is essential to work with a knowledgeable personal injury attorney who can help you navigate the legal complexities and ensure you receive the compensation you deserve for medical treatment, rehabilitation and lost wages.

When a loved one has been killed in a fatal truck accident, their family members may have grounds to file a wrongful death claim. While nothing can make up for the grief that remains after losing a loved one, the resulting compensation can provide some financial support during a difficult time.
