Recent Motorcycle Crashes in Chicago
Motorcycle collisions can claim lives any time of year. They are more common in spring and summer, however, as bikers hit the road after the end of a chilly Chicago winter. In the past few months, motorcycle collisions have increased in Chicago and surrounding communities.
- Waukegan crash claims a life: In early June 2025, one biker lost his life in a crash near Route 120 and Greenleaf street in the northern Chicago suburb of Waukegan. According to local news reports, the motorcyclist was taken to a local hospital following the crash. His injuries proved fatal, however.
- Franklin Park collision with car proves fatal: In April 2025, a 35-year-old motorcyclist lost his life in a collision with a car on Mannheim Road near Belmont in Franklin Park, just northwest of Chicago. A police investigation of the area had roads closed for over eight hours.
- Stevenson Expressway crash kills a motorcyclist: In March 2025, a motorcycle and a sedan collided on the Southwest Side’s Stevenson Expressway (I-55). The collision occurred near Damen Avenue in the early morning hours. The motorcyclist was later identified as a 26-year-old Chicago resident.
- Arlington Heights crash involves three vehicles, claims one life: In late 2024, a three-vehicle crash in the northern Chicago suburbs of Arlington Heights claimed the life of a motorcyclist. The crash occurred when a sedan failed to yield the right-of-way while turning left. The car hit both a second car and the motorcyclist. The motorcyclist died at the scene while receiving treatment from first responders.
Motorcycle Injury and Fatality Statistics in Chicago
The Illinois Department of Transportation collects data on vehicle accidents in cities throughout Illinois. The department’s most recent complete data set reflects crashes, injuries, and deaths that occurred in 2023.
In 2023, 575 motorcycles were involved in crashes in Chicago. Eight of these collisions claimed a life. Another 329 people were injured in Chicago motorcycle collisions. Ninety of those injured experienced serious injuries; the rest experienced mild to moderate injuries.
Three-wheeled motorcycles, or “trikes,” were involved in 13 crashes in Chicago in 2023. These crashes resulted in five injuries, all serious or moderate.
Additional crashes, injuries, and deaths were reported in Chicago suburbs. For example, in Chicago Heights in 2023, six motorcycle crashes occurred, causing five injuries. Other motorcycle crash death and injury reports in the suburbs included:
- Arlington Heights: In 2023, nine motorcycle crashes in Arlington Heights resulted in eight serious injuries and several mild or moderate injuries.
- Franklin Park: Franklin Park was the site of five motorcycle and two moped crashes in 2023. These collisions caused multiple injuries, many of them serious.
- Naperville: 2023 saw thirteen motorcycle crashes in Naperville. While none of these crashes proved fatal, twelve resulted in at least one serious injury.
- Schaumburg: Thirteen motorcycle accidents occurred in Schaumburg in 2023, causing twelve serious injuries.
- Waukegan: In Waukegan, 20 motorcycle accidents were reported in 2023. These crashes claimed one life and caused 14 catastrophic injuries.
August is the most dangerous month for motorcyclists in the US. More crashes occur in August than in any other month. Since August is also one of the warmest and busiest months on Chicago roads, it is likely that motorcycle injury and crash rates will increase as well.
