Truck driver cited in fatal collision with Joliet motorcyclist

A 47-year-old motorcyclist died in an accident with a semi-tractor trailer in Joliet, Illinois. The Joliet Police Department said the incident took place near Millsdale Road and CenterPoint Way.

The motorcyclist was identified as Willie J. Miller. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead within an hour, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Both the semi and the motorcycle were traveling southbound on CenterPoint Way. The truck driver tried to make a U-turn near Millsdale Road, causing the motorcycle to slam into the semi as it was turning around.

Police cited the truck driver, 49, for disobeying a traffic control device. They did not disclose whether he was injured in the crash. Authorities were continuing their investigation into the motorcycle and truck accident.

Unfortunately, truck accidents are not uncommon in Illinois. The size and weight of trucks means that these types of crashes can cause serious, debilitating injuries and even be fatal. The Illinois Department of Transportation reported that 3.5 percent of motor vehicle accidents in 2017 involved collisions with large trucks.

Although truck accidents may occur due to poor weather or road hazards, driver negligence is to blame in many cases. Distracted driving, recklessness behind the wheel, lack of training and fatigue are just some of the driving errors that can lead to truck accidents.
