Illinois mom wins $101 million in medical malpractice suit over son’s brain damage
A Cook County jury awarded a record-breaking $101 million to a woman whose 5-year-old son sustained serious brain damage during birth. She filed a medical malpractice lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court against a Chicago-area hospital.
The jury found that the negligence of medical professionals at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park led to complications during the baby’s delivery. His mother, Tequila Snow, arrived at the hospital’s emergency room on Aug. 9, 2014 expressing concerns that she could not feel the baby moving.
However, nurses and technicians failed to monitor Snow and alert doctors. They ignored the baby’s oxygen levels for six hours, causing him to be born with permanent brain damage.
According to expert testimony, the boy’s brain damage could have been prevented if doctors had performed a cesarean section. He now requires round-the-clock care as he is unable to walk, speak or sit up on his own. Snow said the settlement will enable her son to return home after spending a year in a developmental disabilities facility.
