Four key steps injured workers should take after a workplace accident

In a recently reported workplace accident, one construction worker died and another was seriously injured when a steel beam fell on them at an apartment building worksite in Evanston, Illinois. Such cases highlight the fact that workplace accidents can and do occur.

Knowing what to do immediately after getting injured at work can have a huge impact on your future, both in terms of your health and any legal claim you may choose to pursue. While the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is responsible for investigating the accident, you should remember to take the following steps:

1) Inform your employer about the workplace injury, preferably in writing.
2) Complete an injury claim form as soon as possible, even if you have already reported the accident to your employer. Keep a copy of the form for yourself.
3) Seek medical attention for your injuries. Describe the workplace accident to the doctor and explain exactly how you got hurt. Failure to seek prompt treatment could harm your chances of filing a successful claim.
4) Speak to a knowledgeable workers’ compensation lawyer. An initial consultation can help you determine whether you have a claim. You can also discuss any specific concerns you may have regarding your workplace accident.
